Inter Milan secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Genoa at San Siro on Saturday, February 22, 2025, propelling them to the provisional top of the Serie A standings. The decisive moment came in the 79th minute when Lautaro Martínez's glancing header, deflected off Genoa midfielder Patrizio Masini, found the back of the net. This win elevates Inter to 57 points, placing them one point ahead of Napoli, who are set to face Como on Sunday.

The match commenced with Inter exerting early pressure, dominating possession in the opening ten minutes. However, Genoa's disciplined defense effectively stifled clear-cut opportunities, resulting in a first half devoid of significant chances. A setback occurred when Joaquín Correa, making only his second start of the season, was forced to exit at halftime due to a muscular issue, leading to Mehdi Taremi's introduction.

In the second half, Inter intensified their offensive efforts. Denzel Dumfries had a notable opportunity but sent his shot over the bar. As the match progressed, Nicolò Barella unleashed a powerful strike that rattled the crossbar, signaling Inter's growing urgency. The breakthrough arrived when Martínez connected with a corner from Hakan ÇalhanoÄŸlu, his header taking a deflection off Masini to secure the lead.

Genoa sought an equalizer, with Caleb Ekuban's close-range header being denied by Inter's goalkeeper, Josep Martínez. Notably, this match marked a poignant moment for Josep Martínez, who made his Serie A debut for Inter against his former club, stepping in due to Yann Sommer's injury. Martínez described the experience as "hugely emotional," emphasizing the significance of the clean sheet and victory.

This victory not only boosts Inter's morale following a recent defeat to Juventus but also sets the stage for a pivotal top-of-the-table clash against Napoli next week. Head coach Simone Inzaghi expressed hope for the return of midfielder Davide Frattesi, who missed the Genoa match due to a minor physical issue, aiming to have him back for the upcoming encounter against Lazio.
