Iheanacho made the switch to Sevilla in the summer of 2024 from Leicester City but has found limited success, registering just nine appearances in La Liga without scoring. His only goals for the Spanish club came in the Copa del Rey. The arrival of Nigerian forward Akor Adams from Montpellier has further restricted his opportunities in the first team.
In search of more playing time, Iheanacho turned down offers from Greek clubs PAOK and Panathinaikos, as well as Italian side Venezia, opting instead to return to England. Middlesbrough, currently seventh in the Championship, is aiming for Premier League promotion and sees Iheanacho’s experience as a valuable addition to their attacking options.
The loan agreement includes an option for a permanent transfer, subject to specific performance criteria. Middlesbrough will cover a significant portion of Iheanacho's wages during his time at the club.
With his extensive experience in English football, including his time at Manchester City and his key role in Leicester City's promotion to the Premier League last season, Iheanacho is expected to strengthen Middlesbrough's offensive firepower as they target a top-six finish and a return to the Premier League.
