The club shared a heartfelt message: "Two years ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances. Our thoughts are forever with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Christian 🙏🖤"
Christian Atsu, a Ghanaian international, joined Newcastle United in 2016, initially on loan from Chelsea, before making the move permanent in 2017. During his tenure with the Magpies, he made 121 appearances, contributing significantly to the team's success, including playing a pivotal role in securing the Championship title in the 2016–17 season.
Beyond his contributions on the field, Atsu was renowned for his charitable endeavors. He served as an ambassador for Arms Around the Child, a charity supporting disadvantaged children, and was actively involved in various philanthropic activities, including funding education projects and assisting in the release of individuals imprisoned for minor offenses in Ghana.
Tragically, Atsu lost his life in February 2023 during the devastating earthquakes in Turkey, where he was playing for Hatayspor. His passing was a significant loss to the football community and all who were touched by his generosity and kindness.
