Pep Guardiola Reflects on Injuries After Manchester City's Defeat to Liverpool
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed the impact of injuries on his squad following their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on February 23, 2025. Guardiola provided an update on Erling Haaland’s absence, stating, “He improved but he didn't feel good... and yesterday we decided to avoid any risk.” The Norwegian striker, who has scored 19 league goals this season, missed the crucial fixture due to a knee injury sustained during City's 4-0 victory over Newcastle on February 15.

Reflecting on the team's struggles with injuries this season, Guardiola remarked, “During these nine years, we played many seasons without really, really important players and survived. This season we had a lot of injuries but could not survive.” City has faced setbacks with key players sidelined, affecting their consistency in both domestic and European competitions.

Liverpool capitalized on City's struggles, securing a crucial 2-0 victory to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 11 points. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring before assisting Dominik Szoboszlai for the second goal, delivering a statement win for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

City, who were also recently eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid with a 6-3 aggregate loss, will now need to regroup as they aim to recover from their injury crisis and maintain their position in the title race. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s triumph solidifies their dominance at the top, putting them in a commanding position as the season progresses.
