Ángel Correa Handed Five-Match Ban for Offensive Language Following Red Card Incident

Atlético Madrid forward Ángel Correa has been suspended for five matches by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following his dismissal and subsequent misconduct during the recent La Liga fixture against Getafe. 

The incident occurred in the 88th minute of Atlético's 2-1 defeat on Sunday, when Correa was shown a straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Getafe defender Djené, a decision confirmed after a VAR review. Following his expulsion, Correa directed repeated insults at referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández, who documented the offensive remarks in his match report. 

The RFEF's disciplinary committee imposed a one-match ban for the red card offense and an additional four-match suspension for the verbal abuse, totaling a five-game absence. This sanction means Correa will miss key upcoming fixtures, including La Liga matches against Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, and Valladolid, as well as the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona. 

In response to the incident, Correa issued a public apology on social media, expressing regret for his actions and acknowledging that his behavior was inappropriate. 

Atlético Madrid has the option to appeal the suspension; however, the likelihood of a reduction appears minimal given the severity of the offense and the standard disciplinary guidelines.
