Atlético President Enrique Cerezo Criticizes Thibaut Courtois: "He Should Be Grateful for His Time at Atlético"

Atlético Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has publicly criticized Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois following recent comments about their Champions League clash. Cerezo suggested that Courtois should remain silent and show gratitude for his time at Atlético Madrid, stating, "He is a great goalkeeper; everyone recognizes that, including us. And what he needs to do is continue being what he was when he was at Atlético de Madrid: a gentleman and a professional."

Despite the controversy, Cerezo confirmed that Atlético Madrid has no intention of removing Courtois' plaque from the club's Walk of Legends. He emphasized, "We are gentlemen, sportsmen, and professionals, and we don’t need to go against our principles."

This exchange follows Courtois' remarks criticizing Atlético's complaints about a disallowed goal during their Champions League match, where he expressed fatigue over what he perceived as a victim mentality from the club.

In their Champions League encounter on March 12, 2025, Atlético Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid after extra time, with midfielder Conor Gallagher scoring the decisive goal. However, in the subsequent penalty shootout, Real Madrid triumphed 4-2, with Antonio Rüdiger converting the winning spot-kick.

Thibaut Courtois had a significant tenure at Atlético Madrid between 2011 and 2014, making 154 appearances, conceding 125 goals, and keeping 76 clean sheets. Notably, he was named Man of the Match in the 2013 Copa del Rey Final, where Atlético defeated Real Madrid 2-1—their first victory over their city rivals in 14 years.
