The Boston Celtics, one of the NBA's most storied franchises, have been sold to William Chisholm, co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, for a record-setting $6.1 billion. This transaction marks the highest sale price for a sports franchise in North American history, surpassing the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL's Washington Commanders in 2023.

Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics fan, brings a deep connection to the Boston area. He co-founded Symphony Technology Group and has a background with Boston-based Bain & Company.

The Grousbeck family, who acquired the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, announced plans to sell the team following the Celtics' 18th NBA championship last season. Under their ownership, the team secured two championships and consistently remained competitive.

Chisholm's acquisition of the Celtics reflects the escalating valuations of NBA franchises and underscores the enduring appeal and financial strength of the league's premier teams.
