Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has hailed club captain Reece James as both a leader and an elite player, revealing that he envisioned the right-back playing in midfield from the moment he took charge at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about his tactical approach, Maresca stated:
"Reece James is a leader, a top player. The day after I signed in at Chelsea, I sent him a video about seeing him as a midfielder.”
The Chelsea boss further emphasized his belief in James' ability to adapt to a central role, adding:
“I see Reece as a midfielder. Since day one. I sent him a clip when he was on holiday about how he can be a midfielder!”
Maresca’s vision materialized in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over FC Copenhagen in the Europa Conference League, where James, deployed in a midfield role, delivered a commanding performance and scored a stunning 25-yard goal. The goal was a testament to his versatility and technical prowess, particularly as he continues to overcome recent hamstring injury setbacks.
