Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has found himself at the center of controversy following allegations that he caused injury to the club's mascot, Moonbeam, during a pre-match interaction in October 2024. The incident reportedly occurred before a Premier League match against Southampton at the Etihad Stadium.
The woman portraying Moonbeam, who has chosen to remain anonymous, claims that Haaland struck her on the back of the head twice while posing for a photograph. Initially believing she had been hit by a stray football, she later learned it was Haaland who allegedly made contact. The woman reported experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, neck pain, and headaches, prompting her to seek medical attention. A CT scan revealed no structural damage, though her symptoms were consistent with whiplash.
Manchester City conducted an internal investigation, reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. The club concluded that Haaland's actions were a "gentle tap" and did not cause the reported injuries. A spokesperson for the club stated, "The evidence, including video footage, does not support the claim that an injury was sustained in the manner alleged." Greater Manchester Police also reviewed the case but decided not to pursue further action due to insufficient evidence.
The woman, however, has accused the club of attempting to downplay the incident and protect Haaland. She expressed disappointment that Haaland was not asked to address the situation directly, stating, "I'm sure Erling would have apologized if given the chance, but they just wanted it to go away."
Following the incident, the woman's contract with Manchester City was not renewed, a decision she believes was influenced by her complaint. The club has denied any connection between the two events.
As of now, Haaland has not publicly commented on the allegations. The case has drawn significant attention due to the Norwegian striker's high profile, but both the club and authorities have officially closed the matter. Whether further developments will arise remains uncertain.
