Real Madrid’s talented attacking midfielder, Brahim Díaz, has been officially called up to represent the Moroccan national football team for the upcoming international break in March 2025.
This marks a significant moment in his international career, as he prepares to don the colors of the Atlas Lions in their scheduled friendly matches against Angola on March 22 and Mauritania on March 26. Both games will take place in Agadir, offering Díaz an opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage with his newly adopted national team.
Díaz’s inclusion in Morocco’s squad comes as part of the team’s preparations for future competitive fixtures, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The 24-year-old, born in Malaga, Spain, to a Spanish mother and a Moroccan father, made the decision to switch his international allegiance from Spain to Morocco in 2024, a move that followed years of deliberation and outreach from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). His debut call-up was confirmed last year, and he now stands poised to play a key role in Morocco’s ambitious footballing plans, building on their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup.
The reasons behind Díaz’s switch from Spain to Morocco are multifaceted. Despite representing Spain at various youth levels and earning a senior cap in a friendly against Lithuania in 2021—where he scored in a 4-0 victory—Díaz found himself overlooked by the Spanish national team for subsequent competitive call-ups. Sources close to the player have expressed disappointment with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), citing a lack of consistent communication and opportunity despite his impressive performances at club level, including a standout loan spell at AC Milan and a resurgence at Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti.
Morocco pursued Díaz with determination, with head coach Walid Regragui and FRMF officials making repeated efforts to secure his commitment, including personal visits to Milan and Madrid.
