According to FIFA regulations, players who receive two yellow cards in separate matches must serve a one-match suspension. Mokoena, who had been cautioned in previous qualifiers against Benin and Zimbabwe, was ineligible to play in the match against Lesotho. However, he featured for 82 minutes before being substituted.
The Lesotho Football Association missed the 24-hour deadline to lodge a formal protest regarding Mokoena's eligibility, which could shield South Africa from immediate sanctions. Nevertheless, Nigeria's Football Federation has called on FIFA to deduct three points from South Africa, a move that would narrow the gap between the Super Eagles and Group C leaders Bafana Bafana.
Currently, South Africa leads Group C with 10 points, followed by Benin with 8 points, Rwanda with 7 points, and Nigeria with 6 points. A points deduction for South Africa would significantly alter the standings, providing Nigeria with a stronger chance to secure qualification.
The situation remains uncertain, as FIFA has yet to make an official ruling. If sanctions are imposed, it could reshape the dynamics of Group C and bolster Nigeria's hopes of returning to football's biggest stage.
