UEFA Issues Statement on Julián Álvarez Penalty Incident
UEFA has addressed the controversy surrounding Julián Álvarez's disallowed penalty during Atlético de Madrid's UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid. The incident, which occurred during the penalty shootout, has sparked significant debate.

In the decisive penalty shootout, Álvarez slipped while taking his kick, resulting in an unintentional double touch—first with his standing foot and then with his striking foot. Despite the ball finding the back of the net, the VAR review determined that the double touch violated Law 14.1 of the Laws of the Game. Consequently, the referee disallowed the goal, leaving Atlético at a disadvantage.

The match itself was a dramatic affair. Atlético de Madrid secured a 1-0 victory in regular time, thanks to Conor Gallagher's goal in the opening seconds, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2. However, Real Madrid triumphed 4-2 in the penalty shootout, advancing to the quarterfinals.

In an official statement, UEFA confirmed that Atlético de Madrid had sought clarification regarding the decision. UEFA explained that, under the current rules, the VAR was obligated to alert the referee about the double touch, leading to the disallowance of the goal. UEFA also announced plans to engage in discussions with FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to evaluate whether the rule should be amended in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional.
