Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has emphasized the club's strategic focus on the Europa League, even if it means taking risks in the Premier League. "We have to take a risk with the kids in the Premier League... we have to focus on the Europa League," he stated.
This approach follows United's dramatic 5-4 victory over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford, securing a 7-6 aggregate win. The match saw United initially lead 2-0 through goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot.
Lyon responded with goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolás Tagliafico, forcing extra time. In extra time, Lyon took the lead with goals from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette's penalty.
However, United mounted a remarkable comeback with late goals from Bruno Fernandes (penalty), Kobbie Mainoo, and a decisive header by Harry Maguire in the 121st minute.
Amorim praised Maguire's contribution, noting, "Harry Maguire is our only player who can score with his head." He also highlighted the importance of such victories in building a connection between players and fans, stating that moments like these can help "build a connection between players and fans despite the ongoing struggles."
With United currently 14th in the Premier League, the Europa League represents their most viable path to Champions League qualification. Amorim acknowledged the challenges ahead but remains focused on the long-term project at the club, emphasizing the need to "build something that is going to last more than any trophy this season."
Manchester United will face Athletic Club Bilbao in the Europa League semi-finals.
