LaLiga president Javier Tebas publicly criticized Real Madrid's leadership following the club's boycott of official events leading up to the 2025 Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
Real Madrid abstained from the pre-match press conference, official training session, and institutional dinner in protest of the appointment of referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, whom the club had previously criticized through its media outlet, Real Madrid TV. This criticism led to an emotional response from De Burgos, who expressed the personal toll of the attacks during a press conference.
In response to Real Madrid's actions, Javier Tebas took to social media to denounce what he perceives as the club's attempts to exert undue influence over Spanish football. Without naming Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez directly, Tebas accused him of pressuring rather than protesting, and of seeking to impose his own vision of football rather than improving the sport collectively.
Tebas stated, "No se queja, amenaza; no quiere mejorar el fútbol, quiere su fútbol," which translates to, "He doesn't complain, he threatens; he doesn't want to improve football, he wants his football."
Despite the tensions, Real Madrid confirmed their participation in the Copa del Rey final. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) maintained the original referee appointments, and the match proceeded as scheduled.
