Premier League to Introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology in Matchweek 32

The Premier League is set to implement semi-automated offside technology during Matchweek 32, commencing on April 12, 2025. This decision follows successful trials in the FA Cup and aims to enhance the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decisions. The technology utilizes optical player tracking and virtual graphics to improve the in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters. Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to this implementation last year.

The system, developed in collaboration with PGMOL and Genius Sports, has undergone extensive testing during non-live phases in the Premier League and live trials in the FA Cup this season. It has already been successfully employed in international tournaments such as the men's and women's World Cups, Italy's Serie A, Spain's La Liga, and the Champions League. The introduction of this technology is expected to address previous criticisms regarding the time taken for VAR offside decisions and the lack of replays for fans.
