Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modrić has officially become a minority investor in Swansea City AFC, marking his first step into football club ownership.
At 39, Modrić is preparing for life beyond his playing career by joining the English Championship side's ownership group. He shared his excitement about the opportunity, pointing to Swansea’s proud tradition, dedicated supporters, and ambitious vision as key factors behind his decision. Modrić also emphasized his intention to use his extensive experience at the highest levels of football to support the club’s long-term progress.
Despite taking on this new role, the veteran midfielder remains focused on his current football commitments. He continues to play for Real Madrid and is also expected to represent Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Swansea City, currently positioned mid-table in the Championship, has been undergoing structural changes aimed at rebuilding the club. Recent appointments include Tom Gorringe as CEO and Richard Montague as Director of Football. The Welsh side, relegated from the Premier League in 2018, is working toward a top-flight return while managing financial challenges, including a reported pre-tax loss of £15.2 million in the financial year ending June 2024.
Modrić now joins a varied group of owners, including American investors Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Jason Cohen, and Nigel Morris. The Swansea City Supporters' Trust also retains a meaningful stake in the club, underlining its community-rooted values.
