Tarkowski Apologizes to Mac Allister After Controversial Tackle in Merseyside Derby

Everton’s James Tarkowski found himself at the center of controversy during the 246th Merseyside derby, after a high tackle on Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister in the 11th minute. Despite the severity of the challenge, which appeared to catch Mac Allister on the ankle, referee Samuel Barrott only issued a yellow card, a decision that was upheld after a VAR review.
Tarkowski’s tackle led to immediate protests from Liverpool players and fans, with many feeling that the challenge warranted a red card. However, the Premier League later explained that while the tackle was deemed reckless, it was not severe enough to warrant a sending-off as Tarkowski had played the ball first.
Post-match footage showed Tarkowski apologizing to Mac Allister for the incident, though the Liverpool midfielder appeared reluctant to fully accept the gesture. Critics, including former players and pundits, condemned both the tackle and the failure of VAR to intervene, questioning the system’s effectiveness.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, while acknowledging the discussions surrounding the challenge, refrained from commenting further, noting that the issue had already been widely addressed. Despite the controversy, Liverpool secured a 1-0 victory, with Diogo Jota scoring the only goal of the match, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to 12 points.
