Thibaut Courtois Warns Real Madrid of Arsenal’s Set-Piece Threat Ahead of Costly Defeat

Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, had issued a warning before the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal. His concerns proved prophetic as Real Madrid suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on April 8, 2025.
Courtois had emphasized the importance of preparation and concentration when defending set-pieces, stating, “We have to be very focused and execute well in defending corners.” He also revealed that Real Madrid were taking special measures in training to counter Arsenal’s strategy, saying, “We are training specifically to counter this threat.”

Arsenal, who have scored more goals from set-pieces than any other team in the Premier League since last season, demonstrated their lethal efficiency once again. Declan Rice was the star of the night, scoring two sensational free-kicks in the 58th and 70th minutes, curling both past Courtois with precision. Mikel Merino sealed the victory with a well-placed finish in the 75th minute following another threatening play.

The Spanish side’s weakness at defending dead-ball situations was exploited mercilessly, and the absence of key players only made matters worse. Aurélien Tchouaméni was suspended, while defenders Ferland Mendy and Fran García were sidelined due to injuries.

Arsenal’s set-piece success has been largely credited to their specialist coach Nicolas Jover, whose tactical input has become a crucial part of Mikel Arteta’s attacking setup. In fact, 27% of Arsenal’s goals this season have come from set-pieces, more than any other team in the Premier League.

With the second leg to be played at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid now face an uphill battle.
