Nigerian journalist Kemi Olunloyo has shared her reasons for not attending her father’s burial, following the announcement of his passing. Her father, Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a respected former governor of Oyo State, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy in Nigerian politics and governance.
Addressing concerns raised by the people of Oyo State, Olunloyo took to Twitter to clarify her absence from the state funeral. She expressed her intentions to commemorate her father’s life through a virtual memorial on Facebook on what would have been his 90th birthday, scheduled for Monday, April 14. Reflecting on her personal experiences, she stated:
"My father did not attend my three graduations in America without any apparent reason, and I was the only child absent from his inauguration in October 1983, as I had just begun pharmacy school in August of that same year. While I respect the significance of this moment, I made a personal decision years ago not to return to Nigeria—even in the event of his passing."
The journalist also shared her challenges and strained relationship with her father, noting unresolved issues stemming from her time in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Olunloyo spoke candidly about her struggles during her years in Nigeria, including her departure from Ibadan in 2019 to Lagos, before eventually leaving the country entirely.
Her last interaction with her father occurred in February 2018 at her aunt’s funeral. This, she revealed, was one of the few moments they shared in recent years. Olunloyo's remarks have generated mixed reactions, with some expressing empathy for her decision while others have criticized her stance.
The passing of Victor Omololu Olunloyo is a significant moment in Nigerian history, as he was regarded as a key figure in the governance of Oyo State during his tenure as governor. His contributions to the state continue to be remembered and celebrated.
