Erik ten Hag Appointed Bayer Leverkusen Head Coach on Two-Year Deal

Bayer Leverkusen have officially appointed Erik ten Hag as their new head coach on a two-year contract, following the departure of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. The 55-year-old Dutchman, who previously managed Ajax and Manchester United, is set to lead the Bundesliga champions as they aim to build upon their historic 2023–24 unbeaten domestic season.

Ten Hag's appointment concludes Leverkusen's search for Alonso's successor, a process that also considered candidates like Cesc Fàbregas and Xavi Hernández. His familiarity with German football—having managed Bayern Munich II from 2013 to 2015—and fluency in the language are expected to facilitate a smooth transition.

During his tenure at Ajax (2018–2022), Ten Hag secured three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cups, and guided the team to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2019. At Manchester United, he won both the FA Cup and EFL Cup before his departure in October 2024.

Leverkusen's management anticipates that Ten Hag's tactical expertise and experience will sustain the club's competitive edge in the Bundesliga and European competitions.
