Ajax and Dutch international Quincy Promes has reportedly been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands to serve a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence stemming from two separate criminal convictions.
The 32-year-old winger, who last played for Spartak Moscow, was convicted in absentia of involvement in a major cocaine smuggling operation and a separate case of aggravated assault. In 2023, Promes received an 18-month sentence for stabbing his cousin during a family gathering in Abcoude in 2020. In early 2024, he was handed a six-year prison term for his role in the attempted smuggling of over 1,300 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp in 2020.
Promes, who had been residing in Dubai and briefly played for second-tier UAE side United FC after his departure from Spartak, was arrested earlier this year at the request of Dutch authorities. Following a lengthy legal process, he was extradited on June 20, 2025, and is now in Dutch custody.
The former Ajax attacker, capped 50 times by the Netherlands national team, is appealing both convictions but will remain incarcerated during the proceedings.
