Atlético Madrid secured a 1–0 victory over Brazil’s Botafogo on Monday, courtesy of an 87th-minute strike from Antoine Griezmann. However, despite the late heroics, it wasn’t enough to advance them from Group B at the FIFA Club World Cup .
All three Group B teams—Atlético, Botafogo, and Paris Saint‑Germain—ended with six points. PSG claimed top spot on goal difference, while Botafogo advanced in second. Atlético’s heavier defeat to PSG in their initial match ultimately cost them a chance to progress .
Atlético dominated possession (23 shots to Botafogo’s seven) and had numerous chances, but were largely thwarted by a resolute Brazilian defence and goalkeeper John, who made four key saves . Jan Oblak was also called into action, notably denying Jefferson Savarino in the 10th minute .
A contentious moment in the first half saw Atlético’s appeal for a penalty overturned via VAR after a foul in the build-up to the incident . Despite manager Diego Simeone’s fury, no spot-kick was awarded.
Griezmann, introduced at half-time, made a decisive impact. He followed up on a loose ball from a spilled Ángel Correa shot to slot home the match-winner in the 87th minute . Though it sealed victory, it fell short of the goal margin needed to overtake Botafogo on goal difference.
With this result, PSG tops the group and will face Group A’s runner-up, while Botafogo moves on to play Group A’s winner. Atlético, meanwhile, must return home having exited at the group stage despite their late flourish .
