Final‑year students burn principal’s residence amid NECO registration scandal
Saghev Ward, Guma LGA, Benue State – In the early hours of Friday, June 27, aggrieved final‑year students of Gyutiev Model College, Saghev Ward, allegedly set fire to the residence of their principal, Mr. Isaac Yina. The students claim that Mr. Yina collected ₦85,000 from each of the 178 candidates—amounting to over ₦15 million—promising to register them for the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. However, when the official NECO timetable was released, none of the students’ names appeared on the registration list .
Infuriated by what they regarded as a betrayal that jeopardized their academic futures, the students later marched to the principal’s home and set it ablaze. It remains unclear whether Mr. Yina was present at the time .
When approached by DAILY POST, Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, stated she had not yet received an official report of the incident. “When I find out, I will let you know,” she assured . Meanwhile, the Guma community is already on edge following a recent deadly attack on the nearby Yelwata community, which claimed over 200 lives .
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the alleged fraudulent NECO registration. Legal proceedings may follow once police reports and official findings are available.
