Manchester City have confirmed that the versatile midfielder Bernardo Silva has been named the new club captain. This decision was reached by manager Pep Guardiola, who for the first time took direct responsibility for the choice—breaking from the club’s usual practice of selecting captains via a player vote .
Guardiola has also designated Rúben Dias, Rodri, and Erling Haaland as vice-captains. He expressed that while Silva leads now, Haaland—who signed a long-term deal in January and is expected to remain at City for many years—will be groomed for future leadership roles .
The announcement comes as City prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup in Philadelphia, where Silva will captain the side against Wydad AC. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Silva reaffirmed his commitment to the club: “This season for sure will be at City, I’m going to stay. I’ve had options in the past and this year, like last, my option is to stay” .
With his contract running until June 2026, Silva is entering the final year of his deal. He acknowledged the possibility of departure next summer, but emphasized that his focus remains firmly on performing well this season .
