Beverly Osu Supports Omotola Jalade in Call for Residual Payments, Criticizes Nollywood’s Broken Compensation System

Nollywood actress Beverly Osu has expressed support for veteran actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, following the latter’s public comments on the lack of proper compensation structures within the Nigerian film industry.
Omotola recently took to Instagram to highlight the difference in treatment between Hollywood and Nollywood actors. She revealed that despite working in Nollywood for over 30 years and featuring in more than 310 films, she has never received residual payments. In contrast, after just four years of working on two smaller projects in Hollywood, she now earns residuals, which are continuous payments from reruns and syndication. She backed up her claims with screenshots of her SAG-AFTRA pay slips.

In response, Beverly Osu addressed critics who claimed Omotola was unfairly comparing two different countries. She stated that the conversation is not about a comparison between developed and developing nations, but about valuing creative labor properly. She emphasized that residuals should be a basic right for all creatives, regardless of location.

She wrote on Instagram, “Art is art. Work is work. Labor is labor. Residuals are a right, not a luxury.” She further added that dismissing the issue as a matter of “first world vs third world” is a lazy argument that only perpetuates stagnation.

According to Beverly, this conversation goes beyond compensation—it’s about building a sustainable system where creatives continue to earn from their work long after production ends. She believes that proper remuneration is essential to the long-term viability and dignity of artists in Nollywood.
