Enzo Fernández issued straight red card following high boot on Kevin Castaño
During the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Colombia on June 10, 2025, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a straight red card in the 70th minute. Fernández attempted to play a floating ball but instead struck Colombian midfielder Kevin Castaño in the forehead with his studs, causing a visible and bloody impact .
Referee Juan Gabriel Benítez immediately issued the red card without consulting the VAR, reducing Argentina to ten men . Castaño, visibly injured, received on-field medical treatment before being substituted three minutes later .
Despite the dismissal, Argentina managed to secure a 1–1 draw. They had fallen behind in the first half to a goal by Luis Díaz, but Thiago Almada found the equaliser late in the game . The point leaves Argentina atop the qualification table while keeping Colombia well-positioned in the race for an automatic spot .
