Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi has opted out of joining the Italian national team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Moldova. Despite being named in Luciano Spalletti’s squad, Acerbi has decided not to participate following Inter’s 5-0 defeat in the Champions League final.
Spalletti confirmed Acerbi’s withdrawal during a press conference at Coverciano, stating, _“Acerbi did not respond to the call-up. Let’s move on.”_ The coach emphasized that the decision was not due to a physical issue but rather Acerbi’s personal reflections on recent events.

Acerbi, 37, had been recalled to the national team after more than a year, making his absence particularly notable. His withdrawal comes alongside Alessandro Buongiorno, who has also left the squad, with Luca Ranieri stepping in as a replacement.

The unexpected decision has sparked discussions among fans and analysts, with many speculating on Acerbi’s reasoning. As Italy prepares for crucial qualifiers, Spalletti will need to adjust his defensive lineup accordingly.

Italy will face Norway on June 6 and Moldova on June 9, as they aim to secure their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
