Leicester City has officially confirmed that Ruud van Nistelrooy has departed from his role as first-team manager by mutual agreement, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

The Dutch manager, appointed in late November 2024 to replace Steve Cooper, secured just five victories in 27 Premier League outings. His tenure included a troubling record of nine successive home games without scoring—a first in top-flight history—and culminated in relegation with the club finishing 13 points adrift of safety.

The club deliberately delayed the announcement until late June to avoid any impact on Profit & Sustainability Rule (PSR) financial statements, which reset on 1 July.

In a statement, the club said: “From his appointment in November 2024, Ruud approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including integrating Academy talent into the first-team environment. He moves on with our respect and thanks for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future.”

Van Nistelrooy also expressed his gratitude, saying, “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff … and the fans for their support. I take this opportunity to wish the club well for the future.”

Interim coaching responsibilities will be handled by the current first‑team coaching staff during pre-season, which begins in early July.

No official shortlist has been released, though names such as Sean Dyche and Danny Röhl are reportedly being considered as possible successors.

Van Nistelrooy, 48, joined Leicester in November 2024 on a deal through June 2027 after a successful spell at PSV Eindhoven and a stint as an assistant and interim manager at Manchester United.
