National Sports Festival Ends in Mourning as Kano Athletes Perish in Road Crash

Tragedy struck as several athletes and officials from Kano State lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, near Kano. 

Reports indicate that 21 athletes perished in the accident, with several others sustaining injuries. The Kano State contingent had participated in the Gateway 2024 Games, showcasing their skills and dedication to their state. The accident has left the sports community in deep mourning, with tributes coming in from all corners of the country.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed profound sadness over the tragedy, calling it a painful and distressing loss. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also offered his condolences, urging stricter safety measures for athletes traveling for national events. Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and the Kano State Government, praying for divine mercy on the deceased.

The Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, a work-free day to honor those lost in the accident. These athletes had proudly represented Kano, securing six gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze medals at the festival. Their untimely passing is a heartbreaking blow to their families, teammates, and the sporting world.

Officials and leaders have called for enhanced transportation safety measures for athletes traveling to and from national competitions, emphasizing the need for improved protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
