Brazilian football star Neymar has issued a public apology following his dismissal during Santos' 1-0 defeat to Botafogo. The forward received a second yellow card in the 76th minute after attempting to score with his hand—a move reminiscent of Diego Maradona’s infamous 'Hand of God' goal.
In a statement, Neymar expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that his desperation to secure a goal led to the mistake. "I made a mistake, forgive me! If I hadn’t been sent off, I’m sure we would have gotten the three points," he stated.
The incident has cast uncertainty over Neymar’s future with Santos, as his contract is set to expire soon. With his suspension ruling him out of the club’s next fixture, his return to the pitch remains uncertain unless a new deal is negotiated before the league resumes.
Santos currently sits in a challenging position in the Brazilian league standings, having struggled throughout the season. Neymar’s red card and subsequent absence add to the club’s challenges as they fight to improve their position.
