Victor Boniface Sparks Retirement Speculation with Cryptic Instagram Post.

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has ignited speculation about his international football future following a cryptic Instagram post on Friday, June 6, 2025. The Bayer Leverkusen forward shared a message expressing gratitude for his time with the Super Eagles, stating:

"Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment—the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot."

The phrase "I don hang boot," a Nigerian Pidgin expression meaning "I have retired," led many to believe that the 24-year-old was announcing his retirement from international football. However, the post was deleted shortly after garnering over 20,000 reactions, leaving fans and media outlets uncertain about his intentions .

Boniface's post came hours after Nigeria's 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. He played 61 minutes before being substituted for Tolu Arokodare, who later scored the equalizer for the Super Eagles .

Since making his debut for Nigeria in September 2023, Boniface has earned 12 caps but is yet to score for the national team . His performances have faced criticism, and the recent social media post has further fueled discussions about his role in the team.

Known for his playful social media presence, Boniface later posted a meme on his Instagram story, suggesting that his earlier message might have been a joke . This ambiguity has led to mixed reactions among fans, with some urging him to focus on football and others suggesting a potential career in comedy .

As of now, there has been no official statement from Boniface or the Nigerian Football Federation regarding his international career.
