Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola hinted that Jack Grealish could be on his way out this summer after the winger was left out of the squad departing for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Grealish, 29, arrived from Aston Villa in 2021 for £100 million but struggled to maintain a starting place, making just seven Premier League starts during the 2024–25 season . Guardiola acknowledged the midfielder’s pivotal role in the 2022–23 treble-winning campaign but admitted that Grealish has been inconsistent over the last two seasons .
Ahead of City’s opening Club World Cup match in Philadelphia, Guardiola explained that both he and the club agreed that Grealish would stay behind—a mutual decision intended to help the player regain form and confidence . He emphasized: “Jack is an exceptional player … he needs to play every three days, feel those butterflies.”
While Guardiola stressed that Grealish remains a City player if a move doesn’t materialize—and left the door open for his return—he hinted that leaving might be the best path forward . Potential destinations include Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham, Napoli, and perhaps Aston Villa—a reunion with his boyhood club .
Adding context to City’s squad overhaul, Guardiola confirmed that Bernardo Silva has been appointed the new captain. The club has also introduced new signings like Aït‑Nouri, Cherki, and Reijnders, reflecting a significant summer refresh .
