Nigerian writer and social commentator Solomon Buchi has sharply criticized the recent decision by the BET Awards to name American rapper and songwriter GloRilla as the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Artist.

In a video shared online, Buchi questioned the basis for the award, pointing out that GloRilla—primarily known for her secular rap music—had only worked with gospel artists on a collaboration. He argued that this does not qualify her as a gospel musician deserving of recognition in that category .
Buchi further criticized the rapper’s public persona, particularly her revealing attire, asserting it conflicts with the values typically associated with gospel music . He remarked:
“So naked, profane-singing, seductively pop stars are now winning gospel awards? Shame on all involved to make this happen. Again, gospel industry is a scam. It became a scam ever since it stopped being ministry.”
The controversy erupted over the weekend at the awards ceremony, and Buchi’s remarks have ignited a wider debate on the integrity and purpose of gospel music recognition both in the United States and internationally .
