Hull City Complete Signing of Experienced Defender Semi Ajayi
Hull City have completed the acquisition of seasoned centre-back Semi Ajayi on a two-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year, following the expiry of his deal with West Bromwich Albion .
The 31-year-old Nigerian international brings significant Championship pedigree, having amassed over 200 appearances in the division. He will officially join The Tigers on July 1 .
Prior to his move, Ajayi spent six seasons with West Bromwich Albion, registering 177 league appearances and contributing 13 goals. He was a key figure in their 2019–20 Championship title-winning campaign and featured in the Premier League during the 2020–21 season .
Ajayi also enjoyed success at Rotherham United, scoring 15 goals in 108 appearances and playing a pivotal role in their 2018 League One play-off victory . Earlier spells include time at Charlton Athletic, Arsenal, Crewe Alexandra, AFC Wimbledon, and Dartford, giving him experience across England's top five tiers .
Internationally, Ajayi has earned 43 caps for Nigeria and played every minute of their run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations .
Upon completion of the transfer, Ajayi expressed his enthusiasm:
"I’m really excited. I spoke to the sporting director… they sold me on the vision of the club and the plans for this season… I feel I can bring Championship know‑how, experience and leadership. I am comfortable on the ball, good in the air and my pace is an asset… I’m coming in with a lot of hunger to prove myself again."
Ajayi’s arrival follows prior summer signings, including midfielder Reda Laalaoui and goalkeeper Dillon Phillips, as Hull City continue to bolster their roster ahead of the new season .
