Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been ruled out of the club’s pre‑season tour in the United States after sustaining a hamstring injury during training at Carrington this week.
Medical evaluations indicate the 29‑year‑old could be sidelined for six to eight weeks, which not only rules him out of the US tour but also places his availability for the Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17, 2025, in serious doubt.
Onana’s absence puts added pressure on manager Rúben Amorim and the club’s transfer strategy. United were previously weighing up a potential sale of the Cameroonian goalkeeper for around £30 million, significantly less than the £43–47 million they had paid to Inter Milan in 2023. Now, with Onana injured, finding a buyer is more complex, potentially disrupting planned squad reinforcements.
Meanwhile Manchester United are reportedly exploring alternative goalkeeper options, including Emiliano Martínez (formerly of Aston Villa), Diogo Costa from Porto, John of Botafogo, and Senne Lammens from Antwerp. However, the club’s tight transfer budget may limit them to more affordable back‑up options rather than a marquee signing.
United’s pre‑season schedule begins overseas against Leeds United in Stockholm, followed by fixtures in the US against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton. A home-friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford is scheduled for August 9, less than ten days before the Premier League curtain‑raiser. Onana’s absence is likely to disrupt Amorim’s plan to solidify defensive cohesion ahead of the season.
