Liverpool Football Club has announced the permanent retirement of the No. 20 shirt as a tribute to Diogo Jota, following the tragic passing of the Portuguese forward and his brother, André Silva, in a car accident on July 3.
Jota, who joined the Reds in 2020 and made 182 appearances, wore the No. 20 jersey throughout his time at Anfield. The club confirmed that the number will be retired across all levels—including the men's and women's teams and academy squads—as a mark of respect and remembrance.
“This is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person,” said Michael Edwards, CEO of Football for Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group. “By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal—and therefore never to be forgotten.”
The decision was made in consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and his family. Liverpool will also honour Jota and Silva during their upcoming pre-season friendly against Preston North End, with tributes including a minute’s silence, black armbands, and a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Jota’s legacy at Liverpool includes helping the club secure its 20th English league title and forging deep connections with teammates and supporters. As the club stated, “Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool’s number 20.”
