Kylian Mbappé paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota with a powerful gesture after scoring a remarkable bicycle-kick goal during Real Madrid’s 3–2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final at MetLife Stadium.
The French forward, who came on as a substitute in the 67th minute, scored in stoppage time to help secure Madrid’s place in the semi-finals. Following his goal, Mbappé formed the number “20” with his fingers—Jota’s shirt number—as a sign of respect and remembrance for the Portuguese forward, who recently passed away in a tragic car accident.
The tribute resonated widely, drawing praise from fans and players alike for its heartfelt simplicity and class. One supporter commented, “The 2-0 gesture was a beautiful tribute to Diogo Jota,” while another described it as “pure class from Mbappé.”
Real Madrid had earlier taken a 2–0 lead through goals from Gonzalo García and Fran García before Dortmund mounted a late fightback. Mbappé’s goal restored Madrid’s cushion before Courtois made a crucial save in the dying moments to preserve the win.
Manager Xabi Alonso praised Courtois’s heroics and Mbappé’s impact off the bench, as the team now prepares to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final.
