Spanish midfielder Saúl Ñíguez, aged 30, has officially terminated his long-standing contract with Atlético Madrid. Having been with the club since 2008 and featuring in nearly 300 first-team matches, he exits after seventeen years within the Atlético system.
Now a free agent, Saúl has reached a verbal agreement to sign with Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor, where he is expected to ink a contract running until 2028. The relocation comes after his playing time diminished at Atlético, including recent loans to Chelsea (2021–22) and Sevilla (2024–25), where he failed to re-establish himself as a key figure.
Atlético Madrid reached mutual terms to rescind his contract early—originally valid through June 30, 2026—to relieve wage burden and streamline the squad. Saúl had earned a reported €14 million gross per year, a significant financial weight for the club.
Trabzonspor, meanwhile, has made him a priority signing. Former Atlético teammate Stefan Savić, now at Trabzonspor, played a pivotal role in persuading Saúl to accept the move, sharing insight into the club and city. With personal terms already agreed, he is expected to travel to Turkey imminently to finalize the deal.
