Ruben Amorim apologises to fans after League two club Grimsby dump Man United out of League Cup
Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has extended a heartfelt apology to the club’s supporters following a humiliating League Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town on Wednesday.

In what quickly became one of the worst nights in recent United history, the underdogs from the fourth tier produced a sensational upset. Grimsby raced into a 2–0 lead by halftime, with United offering little resistance. The Premier League giants breathed life into the game through late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, forcing a penalty shootout. However, in a dramatic and grueling conclusion, United fell 12–11, as Mbeumo’s final attempt struck the crossbar.

In his post-match remarks, Amorim did not mince his words: “Everything” went wrong. He described the opening stages of the match as far below acceptable standards, saying, “The way we started the game, we were not even here. When everything is so important in our club, everything that happened—it’s a problem in our club. We should do so much better.”

He went on to express regret directly to fans: “I just have to say sorry to our fans.” In later comments, Amorim conveyed his frustration and disappointment more broadly, stating: “I felt my players spoke really loud today about what they want.” He added that the result reflects deeper, systemic challenges: “I think this is a little bit the limit... something has to change.”

The significance of this exit cannot be overstated: it represents Manchester United’s first League Cup loss to a fourth-tier club and comes amid a dismal start to the season. United currently navigate a trophyless stretch and have only secured one point from their opening Premier League matches.

With the club’s realistic hopes for silverware now limited to the FA Cup, Amorim emphasized that introspection and regrouping are imperative. He urged focus on immediate fixtures and signaled that the upcoming international break will be used to reassess and recalibrate.
