Espanyol Stun Atlético Madrid with Comeback Victory in La Liga Opener

Atlético Madrid’s 2025/26 La Liga campaign began with an unexpected setback as they fell 2-1 to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.  

Atlético dominated possession (58%) and looked in control after Julián Álvarez opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a superb free-kick. The forward nearly doubled their lead, but his effort struck the woodwork. Espanyol found their way back into the game in the 73rd minute through a well-timed header from Miguel Rubio. 

Just eleven minutes later, Pere Milla completed the comeback with another header, sealing a memorable victory for the newly promoted side.  

This marked Atlético’s first opening-day defeat under Diego Simeone in his 15-year tenure, raising early concerns over their set-piece defending and attacking efficiency. Espanyol, on the other hand, sent a strong message on their return to Spain’s top flight and will look to carry the momentum into the next fixtures.
