Dean Henderson’s Penalty Masterclass Seals Community Shield for Palace
Dean Henderson produced a decisive performance in the 2025 Community Shield, helping Crystal Palace claim a 3–2 penalty shootout victory over Liverpool after a thrilling 2–2 draw at Wembley. The Eagles’ goalkeeper came prepared, carrying detailed notes on Liverpool’s penalty takers written on his water bottle—a tactic that paid off in spectacular fashion.
Liverpool had taken an early lead through Hugo Ekitike, but Jean-Philippe Mateta quickly equalized from the spot after Ismaila Sarr was fouled. Jeremie Frimpong restored the Reds’ advantage with a looping cross-turned-shot, before Sarr levelled in the 77th minute to send the match to penalties.
In the shootout, Henderson saved efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah also missed the target. Substitute Justin Devenny then stepped up to score the decisive penalty, securing the trophy for Palace and adding to their FA Cup triumph earlier in the year.
