Levi Colwill ruled out for majority of 2025–26 season following ACL injury
Chelsea Football Club has confirmed that promising young defender Levi Colwill has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during his first training session back with the squad following their Club World Cup triumph.
The England international, aged 22, incurred the injury late into Monday’s training session at Cobham. Immediate medical assessment followed, including a scan that confirmed the severity of the damage. Chelsea subsequently announced that Colwill underwent successful surgical intervention and has now commenced his rehabilitation under the supervision of the club’s medical team.
This setback is a significant blow for Chelsea, as Colwill emerged as a central figure in their defence across the 2024–25 campaign—making 43 appearances in all competitions and playing a key role in securing both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup titles.
Head coach Enzo Maresca acknowledged the severity of the situation, lamenting Colwill’s importance to the team and expressing uncertainty about his return timeline: “We had a problem the last two days… We don’t know how long he will be out… It’s a problem for us. We need to wait. Then we’ll see.”
With Colwill sidelined for the majority of the upcoming season, Chelsea may now be forced to explore defensive reinforcements. The club previously signed teenager Jorrel Hato from Ajax, though Maresca admitted the youngster "may not be ready" for immediate Premier League responsibilities. Other central defensive options—such as Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, and Benoit Badiashile—are also likely to be called upon, though Axel Disasi remains absent from the main training group. Meanwhile, Wesley Fofana could return to availability for Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on August 17, following recovery from hamstring surgery.
