Lookman broke his silence with an emotional and candid statement, expressing both pride in his time at Atalanta and disappointment in how recent events have unfolded. He recalled highlights of his three-year spell in Bergamo, particularly his unforgettable hat-trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final—a performance that delivered Atalanta their first major European title. Despite his affection for the club and its supporters, he revealed he had submitted a formal transfer request, citing broken promises and poor treatment as a professional. He called on the club to allow him a respectful and amicable exit.
This is not the first time the Super Eagles have publicly rallied behind Lookman. Earlier this year, he was harshly criticised by Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini for missing a penalty in a Champions League match. Lookman clarified he had taken the spot-kick as instructed by the designated taker and described the manager’s comments as “deeply disrespectful.”
