Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was apprehended on Thursday by armed operatives of the Nigeria Police Force within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore had been present at the court to attend the proceedings of Nnamdi Kanu—the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to his counsel, the arrest was carried out on the direct orders of the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Police spokespersons later stated that the arrest was effected to ensure fairness in the ongoing prosecution.
