President Bola Tinubu has formally administered the oath of office to Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, and was attended by key members of the Federal Executive Council and leadership of the National Assembly.
President Tinubu tasked Professor Amupitan with safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and enhancing the institutional capacity of INEC to meet upcoming responsibilities.
Professor Amupitan’s appointment follows his nomination by the President and subsequent confirmation by the Senate, after a unanimous approval by the National Council of State.
A distinguished academic and legal practitioner, Professor Amupitan hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014, specialising in company law, evidence law, corporate governance and privatisation law.
With his elevation to the chairmanship, Professor Amupitan inherits major electoral tasks, including the conduct of the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 2025 and the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections in February 2026.
