Nigeria were defeated by DR Congo last night in the CAF World Cup 2026 playoff final, losing 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in Rabat, Morocco.

The Super Eagles’ hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed last night as Nigeria fell to DR Congo in a dramatic playoff final in Rabat, Morocco.

Nigeria made a dream start when Frank Onyeka struck in the third minute, giving the Super Eagles an early lead. However, DR Congo responded with determination, and Meschak Elia equalized in the 32nd minute after capitalizing on a defensive lapse.

The match remained tense throughout, with both sides creating chances but failing to find a decisive breakthrough. Nigeria’s attacking threat diminished after Victor Osimhen was forced off at halftime due to injury, leaving the team struggling to impose themselves. DR Congo twice had goals disallowed, while Nigeria missed opportunities to retake the lead.

After 120 minutes, the contest went to penalties. DR Congo’s substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu, introduced just before the shootout, emerged as the hero by saving two spot-kicks. Captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive penalty to seal a 4–3 shootout victory for the Leopards.

This result means DR Congo advance to the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026, keeping their World Cup dream alive, while Nigeria’s campaign ends in bitter disappointment.
