The incident occurred at the Government Field in Okitipupa, where Obesere and his ensemble were preparing to perform for mourners and guests. Eyewitness accounts describe a sudden eruption of violence as the assailants stormed the venue, targeting the artist and his team. According to Bosede Akinyemi, an attendee who spoke to reporters, the attackers overwhelmed several band members, destroyed musical equipment valued at millions of naira, and caused widespread panic among the crowd. One band member was reportedly stabbed while attempting to fend off the assault, and Obesere's media manager sustained injuries during the chaos. In the ensuing disorder, the thugs also made off with a bag containing money that Obesere had offered in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Ayonla Obesere Althentic, the artist's media manager, issued a statement condemning the "criminal and violent behaviour" in the strongest terms, emphasizing that such incidents at solemn events like burials are intolerable. He confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Okitipupa Police Division, calling on local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Local officials swiftly denounced the attack. Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government Area, expressed profound disappointment, describing the events as "unfortunate and unacceptable" and unrepresentative of the community's values. He pledged to personally contact Obesere and his team to offer apologies on behalf of the Ikale people, while assuring them of enhanced security measures for future events to prevent recurrences.
