Joseph Aloba, the father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has made startling revelations about his son's relationship with his partner, Omowunmi Aloba (also referred to as Wunmi or Cynthia in some reports). In a recently released video statement, Aloba claimed that Mohbad had called off plans to formalize his marriage after discovering her alleged infidelity, while questioning who received her bride price and renewing demands for a DNA test on their son, Liam.
Aloba, speaking in Yoruba and addressing the public amid ongoing controversies surrounding Mohbad's 2023 death, denied that any traditional wedding ever took place between his son and Omowunmi. He clarified that the family had only participated in an introduction ceremony—a preliminary Yoruba custom—prompted by her pregnancy announcement during Mohbad's lifetime. "When my son was alive and Cynthia claimed to be pregnant, I felt it was necessary to meet her family properly," Aloba stated. However, he emphasized that no bride price was paid, a key rite in Yoruba tradition that signifies a binding union.
According to Aloba, Mohbad had initially expressed willingness to proceed with the marriage but abruptly withdrew after confiding in family and friends about the alleged betrayal. "He said he caught her with another man, informed his friend Myson and his elder sibling and mother, and then decided to tell me. That was why he called off the marriage plans," Aloba recounted. He further questioned, "Who collected the bride price? Ask her if we paid her bride price."
This disclosure intensifies the family's long-standing push for a DNA test to verify Liam's paternity, a demand Aloba has voiced since Mohbad's untimely passing at age 27. The elder Aloba argued that the circumstances surrounding the unformalized relationship and infidelity allegations necessitate the test to establish the child's lineage and rightful inheritance from Mohbad's estate. "And that is one of the reasons why I’m asking for DNA," he added.
The claims come amid broader family disputes, including a November 12, 2025, statement from the Aloba family barring Omowunmi from using the surname "Aloba" until the DNA results are confirmed. The family reiterated that no statutory or customary marriage occurred, as traditional rites like the bride price payment were never completed. They have also renewed calls for a fresh, independent investigation into Mohbad's death, which has been mired in suspicions of foul play.
Omowunmi's legal representatives previously indicated in October 2024 that she is willing to undergo the DNA test in a recognized facility, with Mohbad's father agreeing to cover the costs. As of now, the matter remains before the courts, with the family appointing a sole legal representative to handle proceedings related to the estate and paternity verification.
Mohbad, a rising Afrobeats star, died under controversial circumstances in September 2023, sparking widespread protests and demands for justice.
