“We’ll see tomorrow, but I think we’ll not take a risk ahead of the international break. We have to find the moment he feels strong and fit and can sustain the actions in the game which are so demanding,” Guardiola told reporters.
He added, “Still we’re in November, and the best part of the season is ahead of us and we need him! Still we’re playing without the Ballon d’Or winner of two seasons ago, a massively important player.”
Rodri has been recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for much of the 2024–25 season. So far, he has made only eight appearances this season, including two full 90-minute performances. The Spain international sustained a hamstring injury during the club’s match against Brentford and has since missed four consecutive games.
Guardiola emphasised that the decision is about management and long-term fitness rather than short-term availability, noting that the team cannot afford to rush him back given how crucial he is to their midfield balance.
Manchester City will host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium this weekend, with the Spanish coach expected to rely on other midfield options such as Nico González in Rodri’s absence.
