Real Madrid forced to settle for 1–1 draw at Girona as Mbappé penalty rescues point

Real Madrid were held to a 1–1 draw by Girona on Sunday in their latest La Liga fixture. The result, played at Montilivi, extends Madrid’s run to three consecutive draws in the league following recent stalemates with Rayo Vallecano and Elche CF. 

Girona struck first just before halftime when Azzedine Ounahi fired into the top corner after a slick counter‑attack set up by Viktor Tsygankov, leaving goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with no chance. 

Madrid responded in the 67th minute when Vinícius Júnior was brought down in the box, earning a penalty that Kylian Mbappé confidently converted to level the match. 

Despite pressure from Real Madrid in the second half — including a late opportunity for Mbappé that narrowly missed — Girona held firm, denying the visitors a winner. 

The draw sees Real Madrid relinquish top spot in the league standings, with rivals pulling level or overtaking them and raising questions about Madrid’s ability to convert chances amid a mounting run of dropped points.
